Windows on a Mac

Spent the entire evening trying to install Bootcamp on my Macbook so I can run some Windows apps on it. It was pretty straight forward in face much easier than I thought.  Bootcamp installs XP on a brand new partition so XP is basically standalone and does not intervene with OSX which sits on another partition. I got XP installed in famous “39 minutes” and it worked like a charm. Now can I easily switch between Windows XP and OSX just by holding the “Option” key during boot-up and select the OS. I’m going to install some apps on XP so when I go to Hong Kong next month I’ll be able to use some of those XP-only softwares.

Gravlax salmon

After trying the delicious Swedish gravlax salmon from Ikea, I decided to make my own. Got a piece of salmon fillet from Benny, tried to follow the online receipe, and pray for the success. Here is the receipe:

  • 3 pounds salmon fillets
  • 1 bunch dill weed
  • 1/4 cup kosher salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons white peppercorns

Apparently I don’t have 3 pounds of salmon so I just reduced the amount of each ingredient accordingly. Here is an article with full cooking instruction (well it’s not cooked, it’s “cured”).

It’ll be ready in 3 days, can’t wait!

Tasty cod…well…not quite

home made cod dishWell after trying Benny’s tasty black cod he made at the last party, I couldn’t wait to make my own and there I went to Save On Foods to get this $4.5 piece of fresh cod fillet. I knew that it was not the same or even close to the quality of the black cod, but anyway I decided to give it a shot and to try out the difference. The sauce was prepared with the Chicken Marinade sauce from Lee Kam Kee, and added minced garlic to it. The sauce already tasted pretty sweet so I didn’t even put sugar into it. I seared both sides of the fish for 20 seconds, simmered the sauce for a bit, then cooked it with the sauce for another minute. It was certainly tasty, but still no where near the quality of the black cod. The black cod just taste better, more tender…it’s hard to describe, but it has the taste that would just make you craving for more.

Black Russian

Black Russian w/ rockJust made a Black Russian, 3/4 oz coffee liquer, 1 1/2 oz Vodka, on rock. It tastes ok, tastes like alchohol with coffee flavour in it, and a mild sweetness. I’m going to try White Russian next time (just add milk)…lol

Crazy plane crash in Richmond

Plane crashed into hi-rise on Saba Road, RichmondPlane crashed into hi-rise on Saba Road, RichmondThis crazy plane crashed right into the 9th floor of some hi-rise apartment building in Richmond yesterday night…. totally reminds me of 911 and the terrorists’ attack. I went to the tragic location this morning and took some historical pictures (with my new Canon G9 :) ). I think the pilot died and the owners in the unit were also injuired. This is really insane. I wonder how would I have reacted when I was having lunch watching TV and all of a sudden a jet crashes into me. I would probably be in shock for a couple weeks…here is an article about it.

Futureshop matched its price with Broadway Camera, and ended up giving me a $114 refund… I’m totally happy! :) (I was thinking to return the camera if they weren’t willing to match the price anyway)
